Which RV Is Right for You
Motorized
Class A: Price Range = $80,000 to $500,000
The Class A motor home is the largest and most luxurious of the motorized RVs. These are well equipped for short trips or long vacations, and well suited for full timing. The entire unit is self-contained, with the living area accessible from the driver's seat. A major appeal to the Class A is its open feel and large living space. For long-term camping, it is recommended these be used between 30 and 90 degrees as the large windshield makes heating or excessive cooling more difficult. Depending on floor plan, a Class A can generally sleep up to 8 people.
Things to be aware of: Class A motorhomes are available in both gas and diesel. Pricing will vary greatly based upon chassis and manufacturer finishes/amenities. The driver will need to be experienced as it is not always easy to turn, back-up and navigate in a large motorhome.
Class B: Price Range = $40,000 to $150,000
Class B motor homes, commonly called van campers, are constructed using automotive manufactured van or panel-truck shells. They are nimble, easy to drive, and an ease to park and maneuver, even in downtown settings. Van campers drive more like the family car, but offer the comforts and conveniences of home on the road, including bathroom, sleeping, dining and kitchen facilities; as well as, storage. Class B motor homes get much better gas mileage compared to other classes and can sleep up to 4 people.
Class C: Price Range = $60,000 to $170,000
The Class C motor home provides many of the amenities and conveniences of the Class A but in a scaled down and less expensive unit. A Class C can sleep up to 8 people and, just like the Class A, passengers are free to eat, watch television, play games and use the bathroom while on the road. For those with larger families and slightly tighter budgets, a Class C motor home may be ideal for you.
Non-Motorized
Fifth Wheel: Price Range = $30,000 to $120,000
A fifth wheel is a non motorized RV that is designed to be towed. This unit offers all of the amenities of home and can sleep up to 10 people which make it perfect for big families. By far the most versatile of all types of RVs, a fifth wheel's length can vary from 13 feet to 36 feet and everything in between. Perfectly adaptable for full time, the fifth wheel will provide you with a spacious vacation or weekend getaway whenever you please.
Travel Trailer: Price Range = $15,000 to $45,000?
Travel trailers are very popular for remote location camping. These are perfect for those who already own a truck because it makes the transition to RVing much easier. Depending on the floor plan, a travel trailer can sleep up to 6 people. These units can be transported places that you would not even consider bringing other RVs to.
Folding Camper: Price Range = $10,000 to $20,000
Also known as a pop-up camper, a folding camper is a great lightweight unit that offers the experiences of a tent with some of the comforts of home. These units are smaller and less expensive than travel trailers while still not making you sacrifice all of the commodities. Larger models can sleep up to 10 people and many of the units can be towed with a regular passenger car. Its easy towing makes it a highly convenient choice. A folding camper also uses less to tow because of its lightweight. Since it is so much smaller than most units it is much easier to store when not in use.
